my reader /writer disappeared off the start/ computer/area. What the heck !!! I checked for driverss,.... said it was there. Every one around home area said I need to use install Disc .. but it wasn't recognizing any disc, CD or DVD... Short story , I called Gateway... 6 min later I am talking with a tech I can understand. He walked me thru and ended up changing something in the registry. 1 click change . I know your time is relevant but what can you lose. I was thourghly suprised and pleased with my Gateway experience. Hope it could and might be simple and cheaper for you also.
